BRIEF BIO FOR DR SAMUEL AYORA SIRINGI, PHD
Dr Samuel Ayora Siringi, PhD, is a senior lecturer at the Department of Journalism and
Mass Communication of the University of Nairobi. Besides, Dr Siringi has:
1. A PhD in Communication Studies, Master of Arts in Population Studies from
the Institute of Population Studies and Research, Post-Graduate Diploma in Mass
Communication, Bachelor of Science degree in Information Science,
specializing in Media Studies, and Postgraduate Certificate in Journalism awarded
for hands-on working experience in US newsrooms and various universities and
institutes by Alfred Friendly Press Fellow, (Poynter Institute/Kansas City Star, USA).
2. Fourteen years newsroom experience at Nation Media Group as a journalist,
seven of which as Editor. He worked as a Reporter, Education Editor,
Investigative Editor, Assignments Editor, and as Associate Editor.
3. A one-year international experience under the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships,
working in the respected Kansas City Star and attending professional courses at
the Poynter Institute, Florida. He gained wide media experience while reporting for
Africa on the 2008 US elections, in which Kenyan-linked Barrack Obama was elected first black President.
4. Twelve years of experience in media, communications and research
consultancy in the Education, Health and Social Sector. He has widely consulted
for the Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission, Kenya Institute for
Curriculum Reforms, Kenya National Examinations Council, University of Nairobi and Strathmore University.
5. Widely consulted for the United Nations Agencies, Ministry of Labour and Social
Protection, Public Service Commission, National Aids Control Council, Inua Jamii,
UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNDP, World Bank and Amref Health Africa among others.
6. Successfully lead the Risk Management Communication for COVID-19 for the
Ministry of Health through UNES
7. Specialist in proven and proactive Strategic Communications, Public Relations,
Reputation Risk Management, Formulating and implementation of Communication
Strategies, Monitoring and Evaluation and Evidence-based Research.
8. Effectively offered Communications Support for the Education Ministry, KNEC,
KICD at a critical time of reforms on examinations, roll-out of Competency Based
Curriculum, introduction of the CBC, rolling out of the 100 per cent transition from
primary and secondary education, and introduction of the new text-book policy
through implementation of the NEMIS system.
9. Won various media awards including winner of 2009, 2010 best print journalist in
population, health and development awards and 2003/4 Kenya Union of Journalists
best education writer.
10. Published in various referred journals and has supervised more than 50
postgraduate students to completion.
