Dr. Lucy Wanjiru Njagi

Lucy W. Njagi is senior Lecturer, Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi. She holds a PhD degree in Veterinary Virology which she attained in December 2008 from University of Nairobi. She also holds MSc. in Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology (2004) and Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (1998) degrees, both from the University of Nairobi.
She is an accomplished scholar with proven track record in training, research and publications. She has over 10 years’ experience in research project management and has held different leadership positions at the University and in community service. Dr. Njagi has been working at the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology since 2003, initially on contract basis (1st June 2003 to 18th November 2009), then as full time lecturer on permanent employment (19th November 2009 to 7th April 2014) and as a Senior Lecturer (8th April 2014 to date).
Dr. Njagi has been teaching avian and fish medicine, wildlife and emerging animal diseases, and veterinary pathology courses to graduate and undergraduate students for over 15 years. She is an accomplished researcher, scholar, trainer and leader. She is actively involved in research activities particularly in diagnostics and management of poultry and fish viral and parasitic diseases. As a scholar and trainer, Dr. Njagi has a track record in supervising and mentoring postgraduate students and early career scientists. She has successfully supervised and mentored 11 graduate (2 PhD and 11 MSc.) students to completion, while others are currently at different levels of research and thesis writing. Numerous undergraduate students have also done and completed their special projects under her supervision. Her academic and research career has also been exemplary as demonstrated by publications in peer refereed journals and success in grant awards. She has co-authored over 80 journal and conference publications. She has attended and presented papers in numerous conferences and workshops.
Dr. Njagi has previously served as the senate representative for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and an acting chairperson, Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology. She serves in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Graduate Studies Committee, among other responsibilities. In 2012, she served in a ministerial task force for reviewing Animal welfare policy. In addition, she has also participated in developing a gift policy for University of
Nairobi. She has also been reviewing scientific articles for East African Medical journal. Overall, she has established and maintained national, regional and international collaborations that has helped her emerge as a strategic leader in animal health and diagnoses.
