    PhD in Animal Physiology

    Dr. Catherine Kaluwa is a trained veterinarian with a PhD in Animal physiology and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Nairobi. 

    She is the Chairperson Department of Veterinary Anatomy & Physiology and the Coordinator, Centre for Natural Products Bio prospecting (CENBIO). She chairs the University of Nairobi, Biosafety,   Animal Care and Use Ethics Committee. She also Chair’s the Institutional Animal Care and Use committee (IAUCUC) at the National Surgical Skills Centre located in Chiromo campus.

    She is a reviewer of FVM Post Graduate committee and is the immediate former Country Lead Kenya for a 4-year IDRC Livestock Innovations grant in collaboration with Tufts University and AFROHUN network. Her university teaching and research experience is fourteen years. She has been involved in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate’s and postgraduate students including guiding student research projects. She has supervised to completion two (2) doctorate and ten (10) MSc. students and is currently supervising (2) Masters and (2) PhD students. She has published twenty-five papers and one book chapter in International peer reviewed journals. Has presented talks in International conferences, seminars and workshops and participated in multidisciplinary research projects. Catherine has undertaken short-term trainings in higher education teaching including pedagogy courses. Results of appraisals by students, peer panels and evaluation by her supervisors rates her performance as exceeding expectations

    Research Interest Areas

    Animal physiology; reproductive biology; Natural products efficacy and safety validation, herbal medicine bio prospecting, shelf life and formulation using GMPs. 

    Validation of cancer, reproductive effects, anti  diabetic among other properties of natural products. 

    Quantitative and qualitative data analysis; participatory impact assessment, gender analysis, gender evaluation, stakeholder engagement using outcome mapping.

    Research on University ethical review board; ethical considerations while using laboratory animal models.
