Dr. Eng. Mumenya Siphila Wanjiku

Eng. Dr. Siphila Mumenya is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering,
University of Nairobi. She holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa
MSc in Structural Engineering from City University, London, and BSc Civil Engineering (Hons) from
The University of Nairobi.

Dr. Mumenya is a Registered Consulting Engineer with The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), and a Corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK). She has served in several boards, namely: Joint Building and Construction Council (JBCC) where she currently chairs the Research, training, and Advocacy committee. Dr. Mumenya is also a Council Member of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK) where she is the current Chair of Research and Publication (R&P) Committee, and Editor in chief of “The Consulting Engineer” magazine. Dr. Mumenya has also previously served as the Chairperson of Board of Directors of Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI).

Dr. Mumenya’s key Research and Collaboration Experience spans from locally being in charge of coordination of cementitious materials research at the University of Nairobi, to post-graduate research collaboration with “The Concrete Materials & Structural Integrity Research Unit (CoMSIRU)” based at the University of Cape Town, Dr. Mumenya is a Principle Investigator in NRF funded research, among several other Industry-based research projects.

In May 2021 during The University of Nairobi’s 50th Anniversary, Dr. Mumenya was recognized for her contribution in attracting research funding to the College of Architecture and Engineering.

Dr. Mumenya has been a mentor to several female engineering students and graduates, and was the founding chair of Kenya Chapter of Forum for Women Engineers and Girl Scientists in Africa (WEGSA), which has been instrumental in significant increase in female students taking up engineering and science-based careers.

Dr. Mumenya has been the supervisor and external examiner for several PhD and MSc students from different academic institutions. She has been the main author, as well as a co-author of scholarly books; articles in peer-reviewed journals; refereed learning modules; reviewed conference papers; University approved consultancies; refereed exhibitions, and policy documents.
