WMI 606: RESEARCH METHODS

i. Illustrate the key components of a research proposal
ii. Distinguish research for academic and development purposes
iii. Explain the sampling techniques
iv. Develop a research proposal
v. Design data collection tools
vi. Undertake data management and analysis
vii. Develop case studies of research providing policy advise on some of the environmental and social concerns such as food insecurity, deforestation, Water bodies pollution, invasive species, Clean/green energy
viii. Formulate a policy brief

WMI 605: EXPERIENTIAL FIELD TRAINING

At the end of the course, the learner should be able to:-
1. Map out environmental concerns relevant to rural livelihoods and natural resource management.
2. Describe the component of a proposal and show the prudence of problem oriented field work
3. Explain the meaning of participatory proposal writing and prudence of execution of field research.
4. Explain the concept of action research and community problem solving to natural resource management in order to sustain their respective goods and services.

WMI 720 THESIS

• Design research proposal
• Undertake data collection in the field
• Categorise data for analysis and written thesis
• Publish two journal papers in peer review journal

WMI 704 INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Expected learning Outcomes of the course. At the end of the course the learner should be able to

1. Categorize natural resources into the physical, the biological, renewable and non-renewable.
2. Map out Kenya’s natural resources in relation to the national capital.
3. Establish which sector is mandated to manage which resource and its comprehensive mandates.
4. Evaluate the concept of sustainable natural resources management and show the prudence of an integrated management.
5. Demonstrate the meaning of participatory natural resource management.

WMI 703: ECOSYSTEM PRINCIPLES AND CONCEPTS

Expected Learning Outcome of the course: - At the end of the course the learner should be able to
• Appraise the world ecosystem types
• Evaluate how ecosystems function and maintain themselves
• Evaluate ecosystem principles and concepts and how they can be applied in ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, management and governance
• Analyse issues that are threatening world ecosystems and how this is being addressed at various levels of governance at global and local levels.
