Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), commonly known as turmeric, is native to Southwest India with its rhizomes being the source of a bright yellow spice with various medicinal applications. It is widely cultivated throughout the tropics and similarly used for it medicinal value, in the cosmetic industry, and as a dye. Herein, the medicinal potentials of this plant as well as that of one of its bioactive constituents, curcumin, has been compiled. Turmeric can be regarded as a drug for the management of many diseases, such as cancer, inflammations, microbial infections, diabetes, arthritic, muscular disorders, biliary disorders, anorexia, cough, diabetic wounds, hepatic disorders, and sinusitis. Curcumin also displayed various pharmacological activities including antioxidant, antineoplastic, antiviral, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, anticoagulant, antifertility, cardiovascular protective, hepatoprotective, and immunostimulant activities in animals. This chapter provides baseline information to encourage the use of this plant in the management of various human ailments.

This chapter focuses on a potential remedy for the situation: adoption of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), a systematic problem-solving methodology that provides a structured process during the initial stages of design and supports the problem-solving process by providing design information that novice designers may not possess. It provides steps that allow design teams to explore nontraditional solutions and not restrict themselves to common, comfortable ones. The latter problem can be addressed by introducing a small subset of the TRIZ toolset as part of existing design courses. The case study presents a brief summary of results from a formal ideation assessment of two cohorts of first-year students in the same introductory engineering design course. Although it provides a vast and powerful set of tools, this chapter has presented a reduced toolset that is easy to learn and can be incorporated into …

Seasonal climate outlooks have become a necessary input to agricultural planning and execution of all farming activities as a form of adaptation to climate change and variability. Extended climate forecasts of 3–4 months pose a challenge to farmers as it is difficult for them to pinpoint exactly what might happen on daily, weekly or decadal time scales. In addition, such forecasts are presented in form of probability maps and in very coarse resolution, making them difficult for farmers to comprehend. Community-specific downscaled forecasts offer an opportunity for farmers to decide on what, where and when to plant, allocation of resources and on other investment options. This study evaluated various downscaling tools and procedures for seasonal forecast interpretation over the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) region. The tools evaluated were: analogue year approach, Fact-Fit tool, Water Requirement Satisfaction Index (WRSI) and GeoCLIM tool. Analogue year approach turned out to be good but highly dependent on accuracy of the selected year; Fact-Fit tool was able to convert the seasonal probability forecasts into amounts but unable to disaggregate rainfall amounts at daily, weekly or dekadal time scales; the WRSI tool used was limited to a number of crops, seasons and regions but was necessary for monitoring seasonal progress and predicting crop performance. The current GeoCLIM software used was unable to disaggregate rainfall amounts to daily, weekly or dekadal scales but was good for suitability analysis and producing spatial distribution rainfall maps. An integrated approach is therefore desirable for producing more reliable and dependable location-specific seasonal forecasts for direct application by farmers and other agricultural practitioners. This is so important in the Horn of Africa region, where climate change is already affecting populations, and adaptation is seen as a major approach to cope with the impacts of climate change.

Olago D, WoldeGabriel G, Dindi E, Owor M. "Genesis of the East African Rift System.". In: Soda Lakes of East Africa. Springer, Cham; 2016. Abstract

The East African Rift System (EARS) started in Late Oligocene to Early Miocene time and gradually propagated southwards from the Afar Depression, beginning in the Middle Miocene. The hot, low-density mantle material of the Afar Plume heated the overlying lithosphere, causing thinning, regional doming, and the earliest basaltic volcanism in southern Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, the Afar Depression, the Main Ethiopian Rift, and the broadly rifted zone of southwestern Ethiopia represent the northern segment of the EARS.

In the Kenyan sector of the EARS, uplift and doming also gave rise to the Kenya Dome. The radial flow patterns of the initial phonolites provide evidence for doming. Another important observation is that the rift geometry was greatly influenced by pre-existing structures of the underlying Mozambique Mobile Belt. Rifting proceeded through alternating episodes of volcanism and tectonics. Crossing into Tanzania, the influence of the neighbouring Tanzania Craton becomes evident. Here, the rift is expressed only in the northern part, splaying out in diverging half-graben valleys that are outside the Kenya Dome.

Large boundary faults and opposing flexural margins, producing mobile asymmetrical full and half-graben basins that are individually linked along the rift axis, mark the Western Rift Valley. These basins are frequently occupied by elongate and narrow lakes (largely freshwater) separated by accommodation zones and containing significant hydrocarbon resources especially in the Albertine Graben. Small to large lakes existed in the EARS during the Plio–Pleistocene. Lakes in the Western Rift are large and deep, whereas those in the Kenya, Main Ethiopian, and Afar Rifts are generally small and shallow. Geological records indicate that the lakes sensitively responded to orbital forcing as well as to local, regional, and global climatic, environmental, and tectonic changes, resulting in fluctuating lake sizes and even desiccation.

BN I, EI O. "Mobile Learning: A Bridging Technology of Learner Entry Behavior in a Flipped Classroom Model.". In: Handbook of Research on Active Learning and the Flipped Classroom Model in the Digital Age. Information Science Reference; 2016. Abstract

The use of technology in teaching and learning processes has brought a major shift in the way instructors have to design instructions. The cost of mobile devices has declined with time making the devices affordable. All undergraduate learners own a mobile device and their expectations and demand for access of learning content on these devices has increased. While learner’s entry skill levels into a course unit have been a great concern to instructors, the use of a mobile learning system can bridge this concern. The instructors need to focus on making the mobile learning experience more exiting to the learner. This paper has explored how varying learner entry behavior is bridged through an experiment by using a control group and a treatment group. The treatment group was instructed through mobile learning system while the control group was instructed using traditional face to face with no support of mobile learning technology. The results have shown that varied learner entry skills do not determine the intended learning outcome. The learners with or without prior skill and instructed using the support of mobile learning system performs without bias of prior skills.

The 'WISE-UP to climate'project aims to demonstrate the value of natural infrastructure as a
'nature-based solution'for climate change adaptation and sustainable development. Within
the Tana River Basin, both natural and built infrastructure provide livelihood benefits for
people. Understanding the interrelationships between the two types of infrastructure is a
prerequisite for sustainable water resources development and management. This is
particularly true as pressures on water resources intensify and the impacts of climate change
increase. This report provides an overview of the biophysical characteristics, ecosystem
services and links to livelihoods within the basin.

Mulwa JK, Mariita NO. "Dyking processes in Arus-Bogoria geothermal prospect in Kenya revealed using gravity and microseismic data.". In: 37th New Zealand Geothermal Workshop: The next 10,000 Megawatts. New Zealand: University of Auckland, New Zealand Geothermal Association; 2015. Abstract

Arus-Bogoria geothermal prospect, located in the central Kenya rift valley (KRV), encompasses several features of geological significance that are indicators of possible geothermal potential. These include surface manifestations, such as fumaroles, steam jets, mud pools, hot springs, spouting geysers, and high rate of micro-seismic activity of about 500 earthquakes recorded within a period of three months in comparison to other geothermal fields and prospects along the Kenya rift valley (KRV).

A comparison of the results of gravity survey, undertaken between 2005 and 2006 for geothermal resource evaluation of Arus and Lake Bogoria geothermal prospects, to results of micro-seismic monitoring undertaken in 1985 during the Kenya Rift International Seismic Project (KRISP 85) was undertaken to map the existence of heat source(s), presumably due to dyking, and define the brittle-ductile transition zone. The results indicate that the heat source is due to a series of north-south trending dyke injections occurring at depths of ~3 – 6 km in the vicinity of the Arus steam jets. The geothermal prospect is seismically active and approximately 95% of the seismic activity is probably associated with tectonic activity due to reactivation of north-south trending faults.

Further, only ~5% of micro-earthquakes can be correlated with the geothermal activity such as dyking, as mapped using gravity data, and hydrothermal processes. The change in seismic activity at Arus-Bogoria geothermal prospect occurs at a depth of 8 – 15 km with a peak in micro-seismic activity at 12.5 km depth. We therefore conclude that 8-15 km represents the brittle-ductile transition zone in Arus-Bogoria geothermal prospect.

Learner-centered learning theories such as active learning and collaborative
learning are highly supported by Web 2.0 technologies and they are augmenting traditional
teacher-centered approaches. New teaching pedagogies such as flipped classroom have
also embraced the use of collaborative learning where students engage in group-based
activities during class time and they embark on asynchronous video lectures after the
classroom. However, there is little research on how flipped classrooms can support online

Capacity Building in Kenya by Novartis Global Discovery Chemistry, Seeding Labs, the International Activities Committee, and the Computers in Chemistry Division of the ACS between 2010−2014.". In: ACS Symposium Series Vol 1195. Amercian Chemical Society; 2015. Abstract

Novartis initiated a Fellows program for African academic scientists in 2010 in partnership with Seeding Labs, providing a 9 week-long industrial immersion experience at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) in Cambridge Massachusetts. Through their scientific projects and activities, the Fellows explored new laboratory techniques and improved their scientific communication and grant writing skills. A primary aim of the program was to influence the Fellows’ time in the NIBR laboratories into promoting research of potential utility to their scientific and teaching activities on returning home to their academic institutions, thus building strength in scientific capacity in Africa. As chemistry is an essential discipline in the drug-discovery process, it has been an area of focus for several visiting African Fellows and their NIBR scientific mentors. In particular, computational chemistry has minimal laboratory requirements and is ideally suited as an area for scientific capacity building in Africa. In addition, extending drug-discovery capabilities in African laboratories to assist natural products research is of interest, particularly concerning development of treatments for malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and, of recent concern, the West African Ebola outbreak. An ACS International Activities Committee Global Innovation Grant, granted in 2012 added financial momentum to this capacity building project, spurring our efforts in capturing a Canadian Grand Challenges award and the pursuit of funding from IUPAC. In 2014, this initiative reached two significant milestones, creation of its first job, a computational chemistry academic faculty position in Kenya, and the launch of an in-silico database of Kenyan natural products named Mitishamba.

Summary:
Risk is the uncertainty of an outcome and it can bring unexpected gains but can also cause unforeseen losses, even catastrophes. They are common and inherent in financial and commodity markets; for example; asset risk, interest rate risk, foreign exchange risk, credit risk, commodity risk. Investors have various attitudes towards risk, that is, risk aversion, risk seeking and risk neutral. Over the past few years financial derivatives have become increasingly important in the world of finance since they are kind of a risk management tool. A financial derivative is a financial instrument whose value depends on other fundamental financial assets, called underlying assets, such as stocks, indexes, currencies, commodities, bonds, mortgages and other derivatives (since we can have a derivative of a derivative). As an underlying asset one can also use a non-financial random phenomenon like for instance, weather conditions e.g. temperatures. Pricing derivatives accurately and quickly is important for risk management. This is important for both those who trade in derivatives and those who are willing to insure them. In this paper some lattice methods for pricing Asian options modeled using a jump diffusion process will be described. These methods can often be adapted to pricing of other derivatives or solving other types of problems in financial mathematics, for instance a jump diffusion process can be used to describe incoming claims to an insurance company, see [20].

Soil biodiversity represents the variety of life belowground whose interaction with plants and small animals forms a web of biological activity. It improves the entry and storage of water, resistance to soil erosion, and plant nutrition, while also controlling soil pests and disease, and facilitating recycling of organic matter in the soil. Soil biodiversity is therefore the driver of healthy soil for sustainable crop production.

However, intensive agricultural activities are reported to lead to loss of soil biodiversity. This has been attributed to environmental degradation, and consequently to climate change. This paper highlights the importance of soil biodiversity and some factors associated with its loss, and presents a case study on selected soil organisms in Kenya. Results from this study indicated that land use changes affect soil biodiversity, and soil biodiversity determines the distribution of the aboveground biodiversity.

What entails the training of young children making them ready for primary school and in essence for the future? Are there specific items, procedures, factors, etc. that need to be considered for the successful achievements of this goal? Can anybody who loves children undertake teaching preschoolers? These are some of the question that Teaching children seeks to address. This book navigates the waters of preschool teaching – the process of learning, teaching methods, motivation, differences in children all thorough to evaluation as preschool children lay blocks for their future. The journey along this road of preschool education and training begins here.
