Dr. Muchai Gachago graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery (MBChB) in 2005. He later specialized after completing a Masters of Medicine (MMed) degree in Ophthalmology from the same university in 2011. He has has also sat the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) exams and is a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA).

He has since received further training in India and Germany acquiring knowledge and skills in cataract (Fellowship in Phacoemulsification, LVPEI, India) and retina surgery (ICO Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery, LMU, Munich, Germany and Longterm Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery, LVPEI, Hyderabad, India)

He is a council member of the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA). He is a member and chairman of the Ophthalmological Society of Kenya (OSK). He is a member of the Vitreoretinal Society of Kenya (VRSK), the National Diabetic Retinopathy Working Group and the National Retinopathy of Prematurity Working Group.

He joined the Department of Ophthalmology in 2012 and is currently a lecturer giving formal classes and tutorials at the university and  running clinics and operating theatres at the Kenyatta National Hospital which is the teaching hospital.
