Prof. Mutuku A. Mwanthi is a Professor of Community/Public Health Sciences (Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety). Prof Mwanthi holds a Ph.D. Community Health Sciences (Major, Environmental & Occupational Health) from School of Public Health, The University of Texas, Health Science Center at Houston, Texas, USA. He also holds a MSEH (MSC) Environmental Health from East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee, USA as well as a BSc.in Biology with Minor in Chemistry, Washburn University of Topeka, Kansas. He has served for 6 years as Chairman of what formerly was the Department of Community Health and spearheaded the committee whose work culminated to transformation of the department to a School of Public Health, University of Nairobi, in 2010.
Professor Mwanthi is the current Head of Disease Prevention, Control and Health Promotion. He teaches environmental and occupational health and safety courses to under graduate medical and nurse students.In addition, he teaches graduate students pursuing Master of Public Health (MPH) and MSC in leadership and health systems. He is a Community Health Consultant with bias in Environmental& Occupational Health and Safety. He has wide experience of consultancy locally and internationally. He has developed community health management project packages; Designed, implemented and evaluated community health project activities; Assisted with projects coordination, scheduling and budgeting; Reviewed proposals for various projects Research and consultancy interests include Environmental and occupational epidemiologic studies, particular interests in water and sanitation; Solid and hazardous wastes management; Environmental impact assessments (EIAs); Hazard risk and exposure assessments; Impact of agrochemicals on industrial, agricultural workers and small-scale farming communities; Needs assessment on environmental sanitation in consumer products and producing plants; Evaluation and implementation of sanitation programs tailored to public eating premises (hotels, restaurants, kiosks, etc.); Design, development and implementation and assessment of community based environmental programs; Environmental and occupational management and education; Expertise in environmental, occupational health planning and policies in developed and developing nations.
Prof. Mwanthi has authored or coauthored more than 60 scientific publications and 4 book chapters. He has served as an external examiner in more than 15 universities in Kenya and in the Eastern and Southern African Countries. He has so far supervised theses/dissertations for more than 80 masters and 8 doctoral students.
Prof. Mwanthi is member of ONE HEALTH CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA (OHCEA) network, the country focal person and the chairman of ONE HEALTH National Coordinating Committee.
