BIOGRAPHY – PROF. MARGARET JESANG HUTCHINSON

Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson is a Horticulturalist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Nairobi with over 30 years experience in the Agriculture sector. She obtained her PhD in Horticulture from the University of Guelph in Canada and MSc. in Agronomy and BSc. Agriculture from the University of Nairobi. Her research and outreach work cover most areas of Horticulture and more so Floriculture, from policy to programming and the entire value chain of several commodities. Some of these include: Development of tissue culture protocols for several economically important floriculture and fruit crops; optimizing the agronomic and pest control practices of fruits, vegetables and flower crops, reducing postharvest loses of horticultural crops (cut-flowers, fruits and vegetables); gender mainstreaming in policy and programming just to name a few. Prof. Hutchinson has published widely in refereed journal and conferences (Details in www.uonbi.ac.ke).

She has provided strong leadership in several areas and institutions such as being one of the longest serving Board Member for the Horticultural Crops Development Authority; Faculty of Agriculture Representative to the Senate; Chairman, Faculty of Agriculture Postgraduate Studies Committee and Head of the Horticulture Unit of the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection. She served in the Taskforce for Higher Education in Kenya (TAHEST) Science, Technology and Innovation, with the Ministry of Higher Education which sought to harmonize the higher education sector with the new Kenya Constitution (2010) and Vision 2030.

 

Currently, Prof Hutchinson is the Head, Crop Science Section, Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences Grants Proposal Writing Coordinator, College Representative and Lead Researcher at the African Women Studies Centre,  External Examiner of the Department of Horticulture, Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture and Technology. She is also a Council Member in Embu University College of the University of Nairobi; Mentor, African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) and Associate Mentor, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences; Regional Consultant Trainer, USAID’s “Feed The Future Program” in Eastern and Southern Africa on Food Security, Leadership and management; Program Coordinator with the Kenya Professional Association for Women in Agriculture and Environment; Vice Chairman, Action Aid International Kenya and Deacon and Church Secretary, Christ Is The Answer Ministries (Formerly Nairobi Pentecostal Church).

She is a member of several professional bodies such as the African Crop Science Society, Horticultural Association of Kenya, Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture and Environment, the Agricultural Society of Kenya and Institute of Directors among others. Prof. Hutchinson is a highly motivated, self-driven, results-focused person who is passionate about economic, social and spiritual and societal transformation of individuals, persons, Country and the African Continent.
