Dr. Maurice Onyango Oyugi is a holder of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Environmental Studies (Environmental Information Systems) from the University of Eldoret. His thesis was entitled Modelling the Effects of Urban Morphology on Environmental Quality of Nairobi City, Kenya. He is also a holder of a Master Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems from the African Regional Centre of Space Science and Technology Education – English (ARCSSTE-E)- Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife – Nigeria and a Bachelor of Arts Degree – First Class Honours in Geography and Environmental Studies from the University of Nairobi. Dr Oyugi has a passion for promoting smart, green and climate-resilient human settlements. Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, the University of Nairobi where he specializes in Urban Management and Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems’ applications in Land Use, Natural Resource and Urban Management. His research interests are in urban resilience and morphology, smart growth and green infrastructure, transportation, energy, global warming and climate change. He has a wealth of experience in leadership and management acquired through working with Multilateral Development Institutions such as the UN-Habitat, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and international research institutions with others being Governmental Institutions such as the City Council of Nairobi and the Government of Kenya. Dr Oyugi has extensively published papers on land use/land cover dynamics and management, urban pollution and heat islands, urban resilience, climate change adaptation and vulnerability as well as human settlement environmental information systems in several peer-reviewed journals, books and policy briefs. Alongside this, he has successfully supervised several Postgraduate Students to completion. Further to formally being trained in Computer Programming in Basic, COBOL, FORTRAN and Pascal languages, he is proficient in Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) and Microsoft Office, all geared to their applications in research, policy formulation and analysis. Dr Oyugi has strong ability to analyse policy trends as well as work with communities in initiating development programmes for sustainable urban development and poverty eradication.
Research Interests
Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems application in Land use, Natural Resource and Disaster Management, Urban Management and Environmental Planning, Urban Morphology, smart growth and green infrastructure, transportation, energy, global warming and climate change. I have published papers on water resource managements, land use management, land use/land cover dynamics, urban pollution and heat islands, climate change adaptation and vulnerability as well as human settlement environmental information systems in a number of peer reviewed journals, books and policy briefs. Alongside this, I have successfully supervised several Postgraduate Students as detailed in my Curriculum Vitae herein attached. I have experience in leadership and management acquired through working with Multilateral Development Institutions such as the City Council of Nairobi, the National Lands Commission, Government of Kenya and international research institutions.
