Prof. Andrew Makanya

My name is Andrew Makanya. I grew up in Nyeri County (then Nyeri District) where I attended Kagumo Primary School between 1971 and 1977, graduating top of the class with Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1977. My hobbies in primary school included handicraft and drawing. I later joined Chinga Boys High School for my O-level education in 1978 during which time I was a member and leader in the Young Farmers Club, the Catholic Action Association and Drama Club. I graduated in 1981 with Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and proceeded to Kianyaga High School, Kirinyaga county, For A-level studies (1982-1983) graduate with the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE). I joined the University of Nairobi in 1985, graduating in 1989 with a bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree (BVM). Joined the Department of Veterinary Anatomy in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer and undertook a master of Science course which was completed in 1994.. Between 1996 and 2000 I proceeded University of Bern Switzerland where I undertook a doctor of veterinary Medicine degree (graduating in 2000), at the same time, I undertook a PhD program in the University of Nairobi, completing in 2002.In my research and teaching career I have interacted with peers from Europe, USA, Canada, Australasia and Africa. My current duties include lecturing and research whereby my areas of interest are lung development and function as well as angiogenesis in normal and aberrant situations.

At home I have participated in community development projects including material and financial contributions to schools, churches and children’s homes. I am currently BOG chairman in two secondary schools. I am a family man with three children.
