I received my Bachelor’s of Veterinary Medicine (1990) and Masters of Veterinary Anatomy (1995) degrees at University of Nairobi, before proceeding to the University of Bern, Switzerland where I attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Structural Biology in 2001.I was employed by the University of Nairobi upon in 1990 as an assistant Lecture.  Since then I have risen through the ranks to Lecturer (1995), Senior Lecturer (2002), Associate Professor (2012) and Professor (2016).  Professionally, I have maintained a vibrant research career, conducted effective teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and post-graduate students while still providing visionary leadership at University of Nairobi and elsewhere. To date I have authored over 100 journal and conference publications and supervised 6 PhD’s and 13 MSc students to completion. The papers have been published in prestigious and high-impact factor journals such as Nature, Nature communications, Anatomic records, Immunology and cell Biology, American Journal of Pathology and Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Over the last 12 years, I have held various key leadership positions at the University of Nairobi. Currently, I am serving as the Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. Previously I have served as the Director of Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (2010-1016), Associate Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (2003-2010), and Chairman of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology (2005—2010). During the last 13 years, I have also frequently served as Acting Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences and as the acting Dean of Faculty of Veterinary medicine.

Regionally, I have been the node coordinator of the African Natural Product Training Network (RISE-AFNNET) involving three universities from East Africa (Makerere, Sokoine University and University of Nairobi), a network formed through success in competitive funding obtained from the Carnegie Corporation of New York through SIG-RISE. Through this program, I have provided scholarships to 16 PhD and MSc studentss. Additionally, I have served as a Member of the students Welfare Board, Chairman and Vice Chairman of SONU electoral commission cumulatively for 5 years and the founder Chairman of the Steering Committee of the University of Nairobi’s Royal Satima Mineral water.

I have been actively engaged in various societal leadership roles including serving as a member of the council of Kenya Veterinary Association; Chairman Board of Governors, Gatugi Girls Secondary School; as well as a Jury member in the University of Nairobi tower, Wangari Maathai Institute campus, golden Climate awards and the Wangari Maathai Scholarship Award sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation.

My academic and research career have been exemplary. Besides authoring several publications and attending  National and International scientific conferences, I have a cumulative 25 years of research and teaching experience at various institutions including University of Nairobi, St. Andrews University in Scotland, Free University of Berlin, Germany, University of Bern, Switzerland, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa and University of Ghana.
