Salutation                                                                                                                            Hi! My names are Kevin Raymond Oluoch. I am a professionally trained Biochemist/Biotechnologist in the new and exciting field of Environmental Biotechnology, a Tutorial Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Nairobi, and a PhD candidate researching on the use of extremophilic microorganisms in environmental biotechnology

Teaching experience and other Departmental Roles
I have 7 years experience in teaching Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to undergraduate students in the Biomedical Science programs and 3 years experience in teaching Biotechnology to students in both Industrial Chemistry and Biochemistry Programs. I also play an active role in academic management by representing the Department in several University committees, and also supervising 3rd year undergraduate students in their research projects, including guiding them through the projects on a day-to-day basis and providing guidance and advice throughout their research

My research interest revolves around the use of biotechnological approaches in the textile industry in order to develop products and processes that meet the consumers’ requirements in as sustainable and environmentally benign way as possible. For this reason, my research  focuses on the applications of extremophiles and/or their enzymes in: a) scouring textiles and b) degrading both residual hydrogen peroxide and spent dyes in bleach and dye wastewaters, respectively, as environment-friendly alternatives to the conventional use of harsh chemicals or physicochemical damping that traditionally leads to costly remediation of polluted environments. This project is supervised by a powerful team of world renowned authorities in Biotechnology: a) Prof. Francis J. Mulaa, Principal, Garissa University College, Kenya b) Prof. Bo Mattiasson, Department of Biotechnology, Lund University, Sweden and c) Prof. Rajni Hatti-Kaul, Head of Department of Biotechnology, Lund University, Sweden. To put these new technologies into practice, we have established strong collaborations with Rivatex (EA) Ltd, a local textile industry located in Eldoret, Kenya, through Prof. Richard Mibey who is also the Vice Chancellor of Moi University, Kenya. Mr. Wycliffe Wanyonyi, a Chemist and a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, and Mr. John Isemeki, a Research Assistant at Moi University, are our other partners in this project.
