Personal Information

Prof. Ombui is an Associate Professor and former Chairman (2009-2016) of the Department of Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology. He obtained his PhD and Masters degrees in Veterinary Public Health from the University of Nairobi  in 1999 and 1990 respectively. He is a veterinarian by profession and registered by the Kenya Veterinary Board. Upon qualification with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi in 1988, Prof Ombui registered for a masters degree in 1989 and was appointed to the position of Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology the same year. He was promoted to the position of Lecturer in 1992 after completing his masters degree, and to the position of Senior Lecturer in October 2000 after  completion of his PhD studies the previous year. Prof Ombui was promoted to position of Associate Professor, in November 2009, a position he holds todate. He  is an experienced lecturer of Veterinary Public Health, Food Microbiology and biotechnology, Food Safety and Hygiene. He has published 34 papers in refereed journals from his research activities. He has supervised a number of Masters and PhD students and has participated in various local and international consultancy projects related to his areas of specialization.

Research Interests

Detection of food poisoning pathogens and their enterotoxins especially Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using both conventional and molecular techniques
