Josphat Kyalo Mulwa

Dr. Josphat Kyalo Mulwa is Senior Lecturer in the University of Nairobi, Department of Earth and Climate Sciences. He has 24 years’ experience in the field of Applied Geophysics geared towards geothermal resources, groundwater, minerals,  and subsurface studies.

He holds a PhD in Applied Geophysics, M.Sc in Applied Geophysics and Hydrogeology, and B.Sc in Geology from the University of Nairobi. In 2006/2007, he won the prestigious commonwealth scholarship from the commonwealth scholarship and fellowship plan (UK) and spend one year in the University of Leeds, Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics for his PhD data processing, analysis and interpretation. Further, Dr. Mulwa holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, a certificate on Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Volcanic Eruptions from the Research Center for Seismology Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation in the graduate school of environmental studies, Nagoya University, Japan, as well as a certificate on Seismology, Hazard Assessment and Risk Mitigation from the Council for Geoscience in Pretoria, South Africa.

On completion of his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Dr. Mulwa worked as a geologist /geophysicist in the mineral resources exploration division of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources (currently Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs), before moving to the University of Nairobi in as an Assistant Lecturer in March 2002, where his core duties include teaching, research and consultancy. Dr. Mulwa is also a station operator for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Organization’s seismic (PS24) and infrasound (IS32) stations in Kenya.  Dr. Mulwa is also a trained On-site Inspector (OSI) having completed the pre-liquisite second cycle training course (2TC) from 2010 to 2014, which culminated with the undertaking of Integrated Field Exercise in the Republic of Jordan in 2014. Further, in the year 2016, Dr. Mulwa was invited to participate as a facilitator during the third cycle On-Site Inspection Regional Introductory Course (OSI-RIC-21) for the African region which was held in Arniston, Western Cape, in the Republic of South Africa from 10 to 17 April 2016. Dr. Mulwa has further undertaken training in National Data Centre (NDC) seismic waveform data access and analysis, and is currently involved in waveform data analysis at the Kenyan National Data centre (NDC-KE) as well as being in charge of seismicity monitoring and sesimic hazard asssesment in Kenya using the national seismological network. 

Dr. Mulwa is a professional member of Geological Society of Kenya and International Association of Hydrogeologists’, a registered Geologist by the Geologists’ Registration Board (GRB) and a licenced professional hydrogeologist by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation (Kenya). He is also an Associate member of Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). 

Dr. Mulwa has undertaken research and consultancy services in geothermal resources exploration and development, mineral resources exploration, geological and geophysical foundation studies. He has also published widely in refereed journals, conferences, seminars and technical workshops.
