Dr. Eunice Owino

    Dr. Eunice A. Owino is a Senior Lecturer, Researcher, and Thematic Head of Insect Science in the Department of Biology at the University of Nairobi. She also serves as the Senate Representative for the Faculty of Science. With over 15 years of experience in entomology and parasitology, her work focuses on vector ecology, arbovirus surveillance, insecticide resistance, and the development of innovative tools for monitoring and controlling mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya.

    • Ph.D. in Entomology University of Pretoria, South Africa (2012 – 2015) Thesis: Development of Efficient Tools for Improved Surveillance of Vectors of Dengue and Chikungunya Fever Recipient of the Academic Honorary Colours Award.
    • M.Sc. in Medical Entomology University of Nairobi, Kenya (2003–2006) Thesis: Sampling African Malaria Vectors Using Limburger Cheese and Milk Cream as Odor Baits.
    • B.Sc. in Zoology (First-Class Honours) University of Nairobi, Kenya (1997–2001).

    Research Interest Areas
    • Vector Ecology & Arbovirus Surveillance: Focus on malaria vectors (Anopheles spp.) and arbovirus vectors (Aedes aegypti, sandflies, etc.), including surveillance systems, invasive species (Anopheles stephensi), and odor-baited traps/LED-light systems.
    • Insect Chemical Ecology: Host/plant volatiles, attractants, and behavioral responses in mosquitoes and other vectors.
    • Integrated Vector Management & Public Health: Disease control strategies, policy advocacy, and linking research to practical applications for malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Rift Valley fever, and other vector-borne diseases.
    • Entomology Education & Capacity Building: Curriculum development, postgraduate supervision, and science communication.
