Dr. Charles Muiru Ngugi is Senior Lecturer at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Nairobi. He studied at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) where he obtained a Diploma in Journalism, at the University of Wales Cardiff, UK (MA), and at Emory University where he studied for, and obtained, an MA and PhD. He also pursued a PhD in Cultural Studies at George Mason University. A former Carnahan Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow at Washington and Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, United States, he is also a former Chevening Scholar at the University of Wales, Cardiff. He has taught at Daystar University, George Mason University, Emory University, Washington and Jefferson College, Truman State University, St Paul’s University and at the University of Nairobi. Currently, he is on the board (council) of the Media Council of Kenya and is the Chair of its Training and Accreditation Committee. A former journalist with the Kenya News Agency and at the Weekly Review, his journalism has appeared in the Daily Nation, Sunday Nation, The East African, The Standard, Kenya Times, The Option, The Nairobi Law Monthly, Expression Today, Gemini News Service (London), Panos (London), Business in Africa (South Africa), Aircraft Interiors (California), Middle East Aviation (Virginia), African Voice (Kansas City), to mention but a few. His scholarly articles have been published in numerous refereed academic journals including Africa Media Review, Queen: Journal of Rhetoric, Equid Novi: African Journalism Studies, Media Development, amongst others. His scholarly work has also been published by ABC-CLIO and Greenwood Publishing, as well as Longhorn and the Nairobi Academic Press. He also has considerable experience in curriculum development, higher education management, writing and projects management to mention but a few. His academic and research interests are in media and journalism studies, free expression, constitutionalism, nationalism, popular culture and African Studies.
