Personal Information

Prof. Christopher Mwangi Gakuu is an Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Extra-Mural Studies in the School of Continuing and Distance Education at the University of Nairobi. He  holds a PhD in Distance Education from the University of Nairobi, an MBA. from United States International University (USIU) and a Bachelor of Education degree from Kenyatta University and several other diplomas. He has previously served as a high school where he rose to the position of Deputy Principal. Currently he is involved in the AVU Capacity Enhancement Programme(ACEP) on the Management and Governance of online programmes.

He is involved in the development, management and evaluation of academic and administration of distance learning programmes. He has an experience of ten years in the use of open, distance and e-learning   technologies to deliver education. This includes short courses in Free University of Belgium and Open University of Netherlands. He also participated in an eight months intensive e-Learning in Practice Blended Learning Course from October 2007 – May 2008 by organized by InWent (Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung gGmbH of Germany.

Over the years he has participated in the training of writers in the development of distance learning materials for both print and electronic media for Bachelor of Education Science and Arts, Diploma in Business management, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts. He has also inducted and trained new staff in the writing, production and management of distance learning programmes in the University of Nairobi, Maseno University (March 2006), Egerton University (November 2007).

He has participated and presented papers in several professional conferences which include  First eLearning  Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, 6th- 7th December 2010;eLearning Africa Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, 26th -29th May 2010; the Regional eLearning Conference organized by Kenyatta University between 18th -20th November, 2008, eLearning Africa Conference in Accra, Ghana, 28th -30th May, 2008, eLearning Africa Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, 27th –29th May 2007, 1st International Computer Science Conference 5th – 7th February, 2007, Nairobi, Kenya. 

Prof. Gakuu is the Principal Researcher with the Pan Africa Research Agenda in Pedagogical Integration of ICT in Education in Africa and also a member of the Information Technology for Learning, Education and Training Technical Committee in Kenya Bureau of Standards. He has special interest in e-Learning and distance education as modes of instructional delivery.  He has been worked as a consultant for various organization for instance, AMREF as a reviewer and editor for e-learning study modules, scheduled to train Kenyatta University lecturers on distance and e-learning skill.  He is a team member in a group currently working with University of Nairobi Enterprises Limited, European Union (EU) and Somalia to offer course by distance and e-learning in Somalia.

He has published widely in the areas of distance education and e learning.
