Dr. CATHERINE NKIROTE KUNYANGA

Personal Information         

Dr. Catherine Kunyanga is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Technology, University of Nairobi with a PhD in Food Science and Technology. Her research interest focuses on Food Technology, Postharvest Management, Food and Nutrition Security, International Nutrition and Food Safety for improved livelihoods and income generation. She has published several papers in international journals on this subject as well as attended and organised numerous trainings and conferences both locally and internationally.

Dr. Kunyanga is involved in a number of collaborative projects in various capacities which has provide her with skills in proposal writing, project management and planning and other skills. Most of her projects focus on improving food security and resilience of marginalized and vulnerable groups in Arid and Semi-Arid (ASALs) regions of Kenya including Marsabit, Isiolo, Turkana, Garissa, Wajir, Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui and Kajiado Counties. She also is engaged in training various women groups with the aim of empowering them socially and economically through different agro-processing technologies. She is also a member of several professional bodies locally and internationally.

She is currently engaged in a number of research projects mainly: Co-investigator, Tailored fermentation for delivery of wholegrain and cereal fibre-rich products (FIBRE – PRO)” Era Africa under the European Commission; coordinator for WP 3, Meat Value Chain “Reduction of losses and value addition by strengthening small and medium enterprises in food processing to sustain value chains in East African postharvest systems (RELOAD Project)” sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education, Germany and; Co-Investigator on “Establishment of Aggregation Centers for Smallholder Horticultural Farmers in YieldWise Project and Organization of the 1st All Africa Postharvest Congress and Exhibition sponsored by Rockefeller Foundation, 2017”; Co-investigator, Enhancing the Quality of graduates of agriculture to meet tomorrow’s food security challenge (PREPARE-BSc) funded under the ACP-EU Co-operation Programme in Higher Education (EDULINK II) among others.

 Dr Kunyanga has been engaged in previous EU projects for capacity building in food safety including implementation and evaluation of training in Risk Analysis for FDA project under the TRAQUE Programme to enhance FDA capacity to regulate food in Ghana; delivery of Training Package 4 on Risk assessment from the 20th to the 24th of October 2014 in Gaborone, Botswana under the Safe Food in ACP ‘Des Aliments Súrs en ACP’ Program funded by the EU, UN programme Finance Parl’ue (EDES) and; delivery of Trainings Packages 4 (Risk assessment) and 9 (Risk Communication) from the 13th to the 17th of January 2014 (P4) and from the 20th to the 24th of January 2014 (P9) in Accra, Ghana under the Safe Food in ACP ‘Des Aliments Súrs en ACP’ Program funded by the EU, UN programme Finance Parl’ue (EDES) among other projects.

Dr. Kunyanga sits on many committees and Boards of various organizations and is a member of professional bodies in Food Technology including Institute of Food Technologist (IFT, USA). Dr Kunyanga’s vision is to be at the frontier of learning and in the consequent application of the rich knowledge acquired to make a positive difference to humanity.
