This paper reviews the literature associated with urban growth development, and urban management, relating these to the growth of the metropolis of Nairobi. The paper reviews the land use changes that have taken place in the city and its surrounding in the recent past in the light of the reviewed theoretical background; and examines how the civic and central governmental authorities are dealing with these changes for the betterment of the human environment in and around the city. An attempt is made to suggest solutions to problems of land use management that are associated with such rapid urban growth as that of Nairobi.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Severe malnutrition contributes up to 50% of childhood mortality in developing countries is frequently characterised by electrolyte depletion, including low total body phosphate. During therapeutic re-feeding, electrolyte shift from extracellular to intra-cellular compartments may induce hypo-phosphataemia (hypo-P) with resultant increased morbidity and mortality. This biochemical imbalance is under-recognised, and the frequency of this problem among African malnourished children is unclear.
OBJECTIVES:
To determine the magnitude of hypo-phosphataemia in children under five years of age presenting to Kenyatta National Hospital with kwashiorkor and marasmic kwashiorkor and to evaluate the relationship between hypo-phosphataemia and nutritional intervention during the first five days of treatment.
DESIGN:
Short longitudinal survey.
SETTING:
The General Paediatric wards of the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Nairobi.
SUBJECTS:
Children under five years of age presenting with kwashiorkor or marasmic kwashiorkor at KNH were recruited into the study. Main outcome measures: Low serum phosphate level (< 1.20 mmol/l) and patient outcome (survival or death) during the first five days of treatment.
RESULTS:
One hundred and sixty five children were enrolled between June 2005 and February 2006 of which 107 (64%) had kwashiorkor and 58 (36%) had marasmic kwashiorkor. They were of mean age 20 months (range 3-60), and 95 (58%) were male. The prevalence of hypo-phosphataemia was 86% on admission, increased to 90% and 93% on day one and two respectively, and then declined to 90% by the fourth day. At admission 6% were hypo-phosphataemic, increasing to 18% and 22% on day one and two respectively, and declining to 11% by day four. On admission mean serum phosphate was below normal at 0.91 mmol/l, declined significantly to 0.67 mmol/l and to a nadir of 0.63 mmol/l after the first and second day of treatment respectively, then rose slightly to 0.75 mmol/l on the fourth day (p < 0.001 comparing each follow-up mean level with the admission level). There was a positive association between severity of nadir serum phosphate level and mortality (p = 0.028). There were no deaths among children with normal nadir serum phosphate levels. However, among children with mild, moderate and severe nadir hypo-phosphataemia, 8,14 and 21% died respectively. Children with dermatosis and hypomagnesaemia showed a trend for association with mortality (p = 0.082 and 0.099 respectively).
CONCLUSION:
Hypo-phosphataemia is frequent among children with kwashiorkor and marasmic kwashiorkor presenting at KNH. Serum phosphate levels decline significantly during the first two days of nutritional

Past studies on the relationship between dividend policy and firm
performance continue being an unresolved predicament with few studies
interrogating the causality relationship between financial performance and
dividend policy. The purpose of this study was to establish the nature of
relationship between financial performance and dividend policy of firms
listed at the Nairobi securities exchange. The study applied positivism
research philosophy and descriptive causal research design. The study was
anchored on hypothetical view that the relationship between financial
performance and dividend policy of firms listed at the Nairobi securities
exchange is not significant which was tested against a sample size of 31
firms listed at the Nairobi securities exchange selected using purposive
sampling technique. The research findings were as follows: There was a
statistically significant direct association between return on equity and
dividend policy. This implies that as firm profitability improve; a
corresponding proportionate change in dividend payout ratio is initiated by

significant positive linkage between operating cash flows and dividend

Power utility companies are required to supply customers with power within specified voltage limits. Voltage rise in networks with distributed generators therefore poses a challenge. This paper presents a coordinated network controller whose objective is to maintain an optimal voltage profile across the power network. The operations of distributed generators, on-load tap-changing transformers and reactive power sources are controlled. The controller is modelled as an optimisation problem which is solved using Particle Swarm Optimisation. The IEEE 30-bus test network is then used to verify the effectiveness of the controller. The results obtained show that this controller can greatly improve the voltage profile of a power network by varying the parameters of existing generation and voltage control equipment.

Macrophytes have been shown to perform important ecological roles in Lake Naivasha. Consequently, various studies regarding the impact of biotic factors on the macrophytes have been advanced but related studies on environmental parameters have lagged behind. In an attempt to address this gap, sampling on floating species and submergents was carried out in eight sampling sites in 2003 to investigate how they were influenced by a set of environmental factors. Soil texture (sandy sediments; P < 0.05, regression coefficient = - 0.749) and wind were the most important environmental parameters influencing the distribution and abundance of floating macrophytes. Combination of soil texture and lake-bed slope explained the most (86.3%) variation encountered in the submergents. Continuous translocation of the floating dominant water hyacinth to the western parts by wind has led to displacement of the submergents from those areas. In view of these findings, the maintenance and preservation of the steep Crescent Lake basin whose substratum is dominated by sand thus hosting most submergents remain important, if the whole functional purpose of the macrophytes is to be sustained.

Indigenous plant biodiversity plays a key role in providing nutritional and medicinal (nutraceutical) need for smallholder farming communities. The objective of this paper was to relate farming decisions, farm landscape morphology, crop species placement points, and the nutraceutical-implied micronutrient mineral (NIMM) density. The Kisumu (Kenya), Iganga (Uganda) and Bukoba (Tanzania) lake basins were the three eco-regional environs studied and were treated as the primary hierarchical level. Two visited sites (secondary level) for reconnaissance/collection were nested within the primary level. Fifteen dominantly female households were further nested within sites (tertiary level). By means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, indigenous variant plants (accessions) encountered were collected for density. XRF analyses were backed by key informant interviews. Empirically, indigenous/traditional plant species and, by extension, their diversity in NIMM density, was a three-factor dependent variable in terms of: (a) the ethnobotanic-based farming decisions by which the NIMM indigenous/ underutilized plant bio-resources encountered were purposively grown; (b) choices that were dictated by the topographic soil surface characteristics (terrain upland, steep and valley land properties); (c) near residence-referenced sequent activity occupancy (NR-SACO) episodes; and (d) natural cum farmer-guided plant selections.

The specific gravity and viscosity of biodiesel fuels are key properties in determining the suitability for use of such fuels in diesel engines. Though generally higher than those of #2 diesel fuel (DF2), they have been mostly reduced by blending with DF2 and preheating to achieve comparable values as DF2. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of temperature and blending on specific gravity and viscosity of Jatropha methyl ester, and also investigate the effect of modifying Clements blending equation by substituting volume fraction for mass fraction. Correlation models were developed to predict the variation of specific gravity and viscosity with both temperature and % biodiesel in a blend. Blends of Jatropha methyl ester (JME) and DF2 on volume basis were prepared and investigated in the temperature range 15-60°C together with the pure fuels. Blends B20, B35, B50 and B75 were made. Specific gravity was determined using specific gravity method whereas viscosity was evaluated was determined using the Ostwald viscometer. Specific gravity of JME was found to be generally 4.83% higher than that of DF2. Blending with DF2 lowered the specific gravity significantly, and a correlation model was developed for use to approximate the specific gravity of any JME-DF2 fuel blend. Preheating the fuels lowered the specific gravity as temperature increased. Correlation models were developed to predict the specific gravity of the test fuels as function of both temperature and amount of JME in the blend. Calculating specific gravity using the Specific gravity blending equation proposed by Clements was found to give results within ± 0.5% of the measured values with mass fraction replaced by volume fraction. The viscosity of JME was found to be 42.09% higher than that of DF2. Blending with DF2 resulted in significant viscosity reduction, which varied linearly with the amount of DF2 in the blend. Correlation models were proposed to approximate the viscosity of any blend as a function temperature in the range from 15°C to 60°C, and as a function of % biodiesel. Results showed that blends with up to 50% JME conformed to both specific gravity and viscosity without the need of preheating.

Effects of land use conversion from forest (F) to annual crop cultivation (AC) and grazing land (LG) on soil qualities were investigated in Sasumua catchment with the aim of (a) determining the changes in selected physical and chemical qualities (b) establishing how various soil [1]quality indicators varied with different land management practices and (c) developing the minimum data set for determination of soil health. Random soil samples were collected from 40 farms (12 under LG and 28 under AC) and 11 forest sites together with 7 water samples from rivers and streams leading to Sasumua Dam. A further 36 core ring soil samples were collected at 0-10 cm depth, from three land uses, 12 from each land use type for analysis of bulk density and hydraulic conductivity. Measurement of CEC, exchangeable Ca, Mg, K and Na, pH, EC, base saturation, total N, soil carbon and texture, bulk density and hydraulic conductivity was done on soil samples while water samples were analysed for quality. Effects of land management practices were determined using structured questionnaire. Data obtained from laboratory was subjected to analysis of variance using Genstat while that from questionnaire was analysed using SPSS. To determine the minimum data set, results obtained were subjected to factor analysis using principal component analysis. The results showed a significant change of soil pH and silt content when land is converted from forest to grazing land and annual crops cultivation. In grazing land ; CEC , exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ , base saturation and SOC decreased by 8%, 42%, 52%, 32% and 8% respectively while Total N increased by 6 % . In annual crop cultivated land; exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ , base saturation and SOC decreased by 31%, 40%, 32% and 8% respectively, while CEC, Total N, and bulk density increased by 14%, 23% and 10% ,respectively. Land management practices such as intensive cultivation of horticultural crops, overgrazing of pastureland and farming on steep areas were contributing to soil chemical and physical degradation while addition of farmyard manure and agro-forestry were contributing to sustainability of soil organic carbon and bulk density. Tillage in cultivated fields influenced increase in CEC. Water quality results indicated that land use management affected quality as it flows from forest to areas with human settlements. Soil pH, texture, SOC and CEC were found to be the minimum data set for determination of soil health in the catchment as they cumulatively accounted for 83% of the variation in component loadings.

The decrease in nematode diversity was assessed using Shannon, Simpson and species richness indices and was used to reflect the underlying changes in physical, chemical and biological properties of soil environment. The highest maturity indices for free-living and plant parasitic index were recorded in the natural forest and intensively cultivated land under annual crops (maize/beans), respectively. Plant parasitic nematodes were predominant in soils that were under agricultural production while saprofagic nematodes dominated the forested land as exemplified by the ratios of free-living to plant parasitic which were, 5.18 and 0.54 in the natural forest and annual crop production systems respectively. Changes in the nematode community structure, as exhibited by diversity indices, may be a reflection of real differences in the soil characteristics and changes in ecosystem functions. The response of 21 different crop plants to a mixed population of root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne javanica and M. incognita, and their potential for use as nematode suppressive crops was evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments. Second stage juveniles (J2) were determined under each crop after extracting them from 200 cm3 soil. The reaction of the crops to root knot nematodes was classified as resistant, moderate or susceptible. Crops classified as resistant included maize, sorghum, millet, guwar and pigeonpea, which had galling indices ranging from 1.4-3.6. Cowpea ‘K80’ was rated as moderately resistant with a galling index of 4, while susceptible crops were greegram, cowpea ‘KKI’ and okra (control), with galling indices ranging from 5.6-7.4. Four crops (sweetcorn, babycorn, maize cv. Pioneer (Ph3253) and guwar) were selected from greenhouse tests for the field trials. The selection was based on their poor host status to root knot nematodes as well as relative acceptability to growers. These crops were then incorporated into a rotation programme with okra. Initial and final nematode (J2) numbers in the field was determined before planting and at the end of the season, respectively. Among the crops tested, the highest (44%) decline in nematode populations was recorded in plots under guwar and sweetcorn while the least (21%) was recorded under babycorn. In contrast, 441% increase in nematode numbers was recorded under continuous crop of okra. Okra was then sown in the plots previously grown with the selected nematode suppressive crops and the population of nematodes determined mid-season and at the end of the season. The severity of root knot nematodes on a crop of okra that followed sweetcorn was 3.3 compared to 8.6 in the control which as continuously under okra. This underscores the potential of rotating highly susceptible crops with poor hosts in the management of root knot nematodes

Plastic bags were filled with 250 g of substrate and arranged in a randomized complete block design. The substrates had a significant (p≤0.05) effect on days to pinning, number of caps and biological efficiency. Compared to the control, which pinned at 28 days, maize cobs, sawdust and coconut fiber had short pinning durations of 19, 22 and 23 days, respectively. With the exception of sawdust, water hyacinth and maize cobs, the rest of the organic substrates significantly increased the marketable caps of the oyster mushroom. The straws, namely, bean, rice, finger millet and wheat had the highest biological efficiency in decreasing order of 106, 92, 85 and 77%, respectively. Stipe length was longest in oyster mushroom grown on bean straw, followed by finger millet straw, maize cobs, banana fiber and shortest in sawdust. Mushroom yield was, 80, 78, 76, 73 and 68%, higher in bean straw, rice straw, millet straw, wheat straw and banana fibre treatment compared to the control. Mushroom yields on sawdust were 60% lower than the control. In descending order of suitability bean, rice, finger millet and wheat straws can be recommended for oyster mushroom production.

The (Na+ +K+)-activated, Mg2+-dependent ATPase from rabbit kidney outer medulla was prepared in a partially inactivated, soluble form depleted of endogenous phospholipids, using deoxycholate. This preparation was reactivated 10 to 50-fold by sonicated liposomes of phosphatidylserine, but not by non-sonicated phosphatidylserine liposomes or sonicated phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The reconstituted enzyme resembled native membrane preparations of (Na+ +K+)-ATPase in its pH optimum being around 7.0, showing optimal activity at Mg2+:ATP mol ratios of approximately 1 and a Km value for ATP of 0.4 mM. Arrhenius plots of this reactivated activity at a constant pH of 7.0 and an Mg2+: ATP mol ratio of 1:1 showed a discontinuity (sharp change of slope) at 17 degrees C, with activation energy (Ea) values of 13-15 kcal/mol above this temperature and 30-35 kcal below it. A further discontinuity was also found at 8.0 degrees C and the Ea below this was very high (greater than 100 kcal/mol). Increased Mg2+ concentrations at Mg2+:ATP ratios in excess of 1:1 inhibited the (Na+ +K+)-ATPase activity and also abolished the discontinuities in the Arrhenius plots. The addition of cholesterol to phosphatidylserine at a 1:1 mol ratio partially inhibited (Na+ +K+)-ATPase reactivation. Arrhenius plots under these conditions showed a single discontinuity at 20 degrees C and Ea values of 22 and 68 kcal/mol above and below this temperature respectively. The ouabain-insensitive Mg2+-ATPase normally showed a linear Arrhenius plot with an Ea of 8 kcal/mol. The cholesterol-phosphatidylserine mixed liposomes stimulated the Mg2+-ATPase activity, which now also showed a discontinuity at 20 degrees C with, however, an increased value of 14 kcal/mol above this temperature and 6 kcal/mol below. Kinetic studies showed that cholesterol had no significant effect on the Km values for ATP. Since both cholesterol and Mg2+ are known to alter the effects of temperature on the fluidity of phospholipids, the above results are discussed in this context.

Manufacturing safety is a key priority in the success of any business, as it can affect both the present and future competitive position of an organization. Organizations must measure safety in order to find areas of weakness, and then implement actions aimed at raising safety levels. Industrial accidents in the chemical industry indicate a need for both leading and lagging indicators of safety in the workplace.

The purpose of this study was to formulate and validate a set of key performance indicators that can be used in the measurement and reporting of manufacturing safety, and ensure a safe working environment for the workers on a continuous basis. The final results consisted of 21 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), with fire safety being the most relevant KPI. The information gathered during a manufacturing safety performance measurement exercise can be used to implement activities directed towards reducing the level of worker exposure to health and safety risks within the factory, and thereby recommend application of these KPIs in managing of manufacturing safety in paint manufacturing and allied products industries.

This study investigated the effects of fresh khat extract on learning and memory in CBA mice. A total of 20 male CBA mice, weighing 20–30 g, 5–6 weeks old were administered intraperitoneally with a single daily dose of khat extract for 5 days. The animals were divided into four groups, each comprising five animals. The first three groups were administered three doses (40, 120 and 360 mg/kg body weight) of khat extract, respectively. The last group served as controls and was administered with 0.5 ml normal saline intraperitoneally. The animals were then subjected to Morris water maze (MWM) task performance. Moderate and high doses (120 and 360 mg/kg body weight) of khat extract significantly impaired (P < 0.05) while low dose (40 mg/kg body weight) of khat extract did not have a significant effect on CBA mice acquisition learning. The high dose of khat extract significantly (P < 0.05) improved while moderate and low doses impaired accuracy for spatial memory of the platform location. This study has shown that khat extract has selective effect on spatial learning and memory, with low dose having no effect on learning but impairing memory, whereas high dose impairs learning but improves memory.
