Dr. Agnes K. Meroka-Mutua is an African feminist lawyer, researcher and scholar. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Nairobi and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Her areas of specialization are: Women’s Law; Law and Development, Human Rights Law, Disability Rights Law, and Property Law. She serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the African Women Studies Centre. She is a trainer and researcher at the Africa Co-ordinating Centre for the Abandonment of FGM (ACCAF). She is a Senior Researcher, African Women Studies Centre. She is also a Senior Trainer at the Centre for Land Acquisition and Resettlement Studies (CELARS) at the University of Nairobi. She has also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the East African Law Journal. Dr. Meroka-Mutua has extensive experience in conducting field research using African feminist methodologies and she uses research as a tool to promote gender equality and social justice. She is experienced in policy advocacy and has worked extensively with communities in all parts of Kenya to promote women’s and girls’ rights. Dr Meroka-Mutua has published extensively on women’s rights and has held various research fellowships, including visiting fellowships at the University of Warwick, School of Law in England; Abo Akademi Institute for Human Rights in Finland and at the Universität Münster, Käte Hamburger Kolleg in Germany.
Dr. Meroka-Mutua holds a Ph.D in Law, from the University of Warwick, School of Law, where she wrote her doctoral thesis titled, “A Feminist Critique of Land, Law and Politics in Kenya.” She was awarded the Warwick Postgraduate Scholarship in 2009 to enable her pursue doctoral studies. She also holds an LL.M in International Development Law and Human Rights, from the University of Warwick, School of Law and is an alumnus of the Commonwealth Scholarship Association, having been awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship in 2007. She holds an LL.B from the University of Nairobi, School of Law, and was awarded the 2007 Kaplan and Stratton Prize for being the best graduating student in her class. She also holds a Post-graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
Dr. Meroka-Mutua is a mother to four boys and one girl.
